
In the year 2014, Malta will celebrate its 50th anniversary since it had acquired independence from Great Britain. The 5 coins in the series are all in a way related to this major event in the history of Malta. The first 3 coins in the series reflect milestones that ultimately road-mapped Malta to Independence, in 2014 the Central Bank of Malta will issue the Independence coin exactly when Malta celebrates the 50th anniversary since that event and a year after will commemorate a post-Independence milestone, Malta becoming a Republic.
First Election of Representatives in 1849
Malta was granted a Constitution providing for a Council of Government of eighteen members of whom eight were to be elected by the people. This was a milestone in the Malta democratic process towards independence as people could vote for the first time and elect their representatives.
1887 Majority Representation
Constitution of 1887 provides that four members in the Council of members were to represent the clergy, the nobility and landed proprietors, university graduates and the merchants - for the first time had a majority of representation.
Establishment of Self-Government in 1921
After the riots of 7th June 1919 listed in the Maltese history as the Sette Giugno, British soldiers fire on the crowd and kill four Maltese protesters, during a violent riot instigated by students. The protests lead to greater autonomy for the Maltese. The Constitution of 1921 grants autonomy (Self-Goverment) by providing for a bicameral legislature with the power to legislate on all matters not considered "reserved" for colonial interest.
Independence from Britain in 1964
Malta was granted independence from the United Kingdom as a Constitutional Monarchy, with Queen Elizabeth II as its Head of State.
Proclamation of the Republic of Malta in 1974
Malta becomes a Republic, with the last Governor-General, Sir Anthony Mamo, serving as its first President. The Queen of Britain not longer the head of state of Malta, however, Malta remains a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.
